Why was Clefairy original going to be the Pokemon Mascot and Ash's first Pokemon?

Like there’s so manybetterandcooler lookingPokemon out there, so why were they originally going to choose Clefairy? (I do know that they swapped it to Pikachu obviously). I dunno, Clefairy just looks kinda lame for a mascot.

Pokémon first ventured out of the Gameboy videogames as a comic bookand not a TV show. In the comic book, Clefairy was chosen as the mainPokémon character, in order to make the series “more engaging”(translation: Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle have no personality).

However, when the series was ready for a TV adaptation, the marketersdecided that Clefairy wasn’t cuddly or yellow enough. They replaced itwith Pikachu, who they thought could be identified more easily byyounger viewers. In fact, the only other yellow and cuddly characteron TV was Winnie the Pooh.
