Why isn't Pickup activating?

So using the daycare, I leveled some Linoones to level 83 to try to search for Leftovers. I tried Biking and walking on grass, sandy areas, tall grass, in and in cities, but they won’t pick up anything. I’ve been biking mostly, but I tried walking more and that didn’t seem to help. Is there something I need to do or that I am doing wrong?

Outside of battleAfter winning a battle, any Pokémon in the player’s party that has this Ability and is not already holding an item has a 10% chance of creating a held item for itself, even if it did not participate in the battle. The Pokémon can find an item even if it is fainted.

You need to win battles for pickup to take effect.
