Where'd Scizor's wings go?

Here are Scizor’s back sprites for the early games.

They’ve got no wings, which can be seen in their front sprites.

Where did they go? Why aren’t they there? Would they have been blocking the sprite too much? Has the anime/manga shown Scizor to have retractable wings?

Scizor is a bipedal, insectoid Pokémon with a red, metallic exoskeleton. It has gray, retractable forewings and hind wings with simple, curved venation.

Yes, Scizor does have retractable wings, the reason its wings aren’t in the back sprites for Scizor is probably because it would have been blocking the sprite too much.

He thinks he’s so special, having wings and being able to jump really high. :P
