What are the 3rd versions of Pokemon games called?

This may be a confusing question, so I will explain. By 3rd version, I mean the 3rd game that was released 2 years after the 2 main titles. For example, Ruby and Sapphire were the main titles, and 2 years later came Emerald. Or that Diamond and Pearl were the main titles, and 2 years later came Platinum. Does anyone know what I mean? If you do? What are the games like Platinum and Emerald called?

2 of the game designers (Shigeru Ohmori and Kazumasa Iwao) have referred to Emerald, Platinum, and USUM as “upper versions” in an interview.source
