Can I Covet/Thief them for good?

Unfortunately, the only way you can take an item for good is hacking. All items that you stash with thief and such are returned at the end of the battle. This is done to prevent you from getting items stolen that are rare or expensive like life orbs if your opponent uses thief. Hope this helps!

No your items get reset at the end of each battle

I don’t know if it works in battle frontier but try trick of switcheroo. I know you can LOOSE items with these moves, but try them out to see if they work for stealing (Kadabra learns trick at lv 47 or if you can get a heart scale, Persian, hypno or linoone have switcheroo at Lv 1)

You can buy items,or use pickup.
