I need shiny chaining help?

So I’ve been in the chaining spirit over my school break. I watchedthistoday. What am I supposed to get out of this? Are the odds going to be better for finding a shiny or not, and if so, by how much? Verlisify says in his video something about a “flat rate”, but he’s giving me so much to think about so quickly that I can’t contain it all. He never mentions a specific rate either.

TL;DR: What is the exact rate that it increases, when does it increase, and how do I know if my chain’s broken? What should I recognize that doesn’t break my chain?
